Every Rose Has its Thorn

Every Rose Has its Thorn
grief, sadness, comfort, loss, heartbreak
I formulated Every Rose after learning that a friend of mine suddenly lost both of his brothers within six months of each other. My mind immediately went to his mother, whom I’d never met, and my heart broke for her. So, I did what I know best. I made her a tea for my friend to give to her, with the idea that it would “taste like receiving a warm, comforting hug.” Hawthorn (Crataegus sp.) berries, leaves and flowers strengthen and protect the physical, spiritual and emotional heart. Hawthorn can allow us to break down boundaries we’ve built up to protect our hearts due to grief, trauma, fear, etc. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) gladdens the heart and along with Linden (Tilia cordata) calms and soothes the nervous system – supporting you through some of the side effects of grief such as anxiety, depression and other emotional unrest. Lemon balm has also been known to prevent fragmentation that often accompanies traumatic grief and may prevent a complete emotional shutdown. It can help to restore a clear perspective and positive outlook as well as harmony to the emotional body. Rose (Rosa sp.), like Hawthorn, reminds us that both strength (thorns) and vulnerability (soft, delicate flowers) can exist in one being and helps us restore that balance within ourselves during times of pain and sadness. It provides assistance in beginning again and can allow us to see the bigger picture to have a better universal understanding of events. The scent alone lifts the mood, fosters feelings of promise and hope and sometimes even creates a mild feeling of euphoria. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is also included for its uplifting effects on the mood and heart. Finally, cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) are included for to help achieve that “warm” part of the hug but also for their positive effect on mood.
